Automatic window tiling
Automatic tiling gives every new window a place on its display, so you do not drag or resize anything. It is off by default because it moves your windows. Turn it on in Settings → Advanced → Window tiling, or run Tile Windows On/Off from the launcher.
Layouts
Section titled “Layouts”Pick one in Settings, from the launcher (Tiling Layout 1–4) or with ⌃ ⌥ ⌘ 1 to 4. The shortcuts change the layout of the display that holds the focused window; each display keeps its own layout.
- Columns: windows side by side.
- Main + stack: the first window on the left, the others stacked on the right.
- Grid: a square-ish grid, filled row by row.
- Spiral: each window takes half of what is left.
Space (default 8 pt) is the margin to the screen edge and the gap between windows.
Focus mode
Section titled “Focus mode”⌃ ⌥ Z makes the focused window fill its display. Press it again and every window returns to exactly where it was.
Moving windows
Section titled “Moving windows”⌃ ⌥ with an arrow key swaps the focused window with its neighbour in that direction. Past the edge of a display it goes to the next display.
What is left alone
Section titled “What is left alone”- Dialogs, sheets, panels, floating and system windows, minimised and full-screen windows are never tiled.
- Settings → Advanced → Apps that are not tiled keeps an app out of the layout.
- When an app refuses a size, Ferrocast learns the smallest size it accepts, moves the split lines to make room and floats the window in the middle when it cannot fit. The list is stored on your Mac in the data folder, by app, and never contains window titles.
- When the screen is full, the extra windows stack in the last slot as an overlapping cascade.
- While Stage Manager is on, tiling pauses; it resumes when you turn Stage Manager off.
- Pause Tiling / Resume Tiling in the menu bar menu (shown while tiling is on) stops it without moving any window. The same menu has a Tiling Layout submenu with the four layouts.
- Focus mode does nothing while Stage Manager is on. The tiling shortcuts never replace a shortcut you already set; if one collides, Ferrocast tells you and leaves that tiling command without a shortcut.
Other options
Section titled “Other options”- Activate windows on hover raises the window under the pointer after it rests there.
- Highlight border draws a 3 pt border in Border color around the focused tiled window. It is hidden while tiling is paused or off, under Stage Manager, for floating windows, and for a moment after focus mode starts or ends.
- Quick actions above windows (off by default): hold ⌥ with the pointer on the top of a tiled window (its top 28 pt) and a small bar with its own background appears; release ⌥ and it goes, so it never gets in the way of the app. It needs ⌥ alone: with another modifier held it stays hidden. Its buttons are the same commands you can run from the launcher or a shortcut: Focus mode, Float or tile this window, Move to next display, Swap with main slot and Stop tiling this app. The bar sits above the window when there is room; otherwise it is a compact pill at the window’s top-right corner, below the title bar, so it never covers tabs or toolbars. Keep ⌥ down while you move the pointer to it. It does not appear while a mouse button is down, and the highlight border also hides while you drag or resize. A floating window is outside the layout and stays where you put it until you tile it again.
